The notch collar. A real pyjama collar, cut and set on, with a button placket under it. A parent recognises it instantly as sleepwear, which is what lets a set be sold as a set rather than as two garments.
The contrast piping. White trim runs the collar edge, both sides of the placket, around the chest pocket, the sleeve cuffs and the trouser hem. This is the slowest operation on the garment: a piping strip has to be cut on the bias, folded and set into the seam at a constant width while the seam itself curves.
